* Amber Rudd (Home Secretary) is 54 and Harriet Harman is 67.

WED 2nd: *17 years ago: Iraqi army invaded Kuwait.

THURS 3rd: * RHS Hyde Hall Flower Show until 06/08.

Ÿ * Golf: Women’s British Open, Kingsbarns, Scotland – until 06/08.

Ÿ * Jack Straw is 71.

Ÿ* 72 years ago: WW2 – USA dropped 1st Atomic bomb on Hiroshima-Japan, killing 70,000 and injuring a further 70,000.

* Geri Halliwell (Spice Girls) is 45.

TUES 7th: * 70 years ago: The  Kon-Tiki , Thor Heyerdahl’s balsa wood raft, smashes into the reef at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands after a 101-day, 4,300 mile, voyage across the Eastern Pacific Ocean, proving that pre-historic peoples could hypothetically have travelled to the Central Pacific islands from South America.

WED 8th: * Special Olympics GB National Games, Sheffield.

* Princess Beatrice is 29 and Roger Federer is 36.

WED 9th: * Rugby union: Women’s World Cup, Ireland – until 26/08.

* 72 years ago: WW2 – USA dropped 2nd Atomic bomb on Nagasaki following non-compliance of a demand for surrender – killing 35,000 and injuring a further 60,000.

* 75 years ago: WW2 – Mahatma Gandhi is arrested following riots for Indian independence.

* Melanie Griffith (actress) is 60.

THURS 10th: * Golf: US PGA Championship, Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, North Carolina – until 13/08.

* Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) is 70.

FRI 11th: * 75 years ago: WW2 – HMS Eagle, an aircraft carrier on convoy duty to Malta, is torpedoed and sinks with heavy loss of life.

SAT 12th: * ‘The Glorious 12th’ – start of the Grouse shooting season.

* Football: Premier League 2017/18 season due to start.

SUN 13th: * 35 years ago: First UK heart-lung transplant at Harefield Hospital.

MON 14th:  * 70 years ago: UK granted Pakistan independence.

* 75 years ago: WW2 – Battle of the Eastern Solomons; USS Enterprise badly damaged and Japanese lost the Ryujo, a light aircraft carrier.

* Stephen Fry is 60 today.
